Saint Patrick´s Day

Today is Saint Patrick´s day!

This festival is celebrated in Ireland and in the USA by people from Irish origins. How? Mainly by drinking a Guiness beer, but we are going to celebrate it a little differently.
First of all, a little bit of history with this video:

Who was Saint Patrick?

-St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.

-He was born in Roman Britain but he was brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He was a slave for six years but then he became a priest.

- Saint Patrick converted many Irish to Christianity in the fifth century. The legend says he expelled snakes ( the devil ) from Ireland
- St. Patrick incorporated traditional Celtic symbols, like the bonfire and the sun, into his Christian teachings.
- St. Patrick died on March 17, circa 462.
- St. Patrick’s Day is the saint’s feast day and has evolved from a religious holiday to a worldwide celebration.

How do people celebrate Saint Patrick?

( apart from drinking beer, as we said before)
•Christians attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon, although pubs in Ireland
were closed on March 17 by law until 1995.

•They traditionally eat Irish bacon and cabbage.

•The first St. Patty’s Day parade occurred when Irish soldiers in the British army marched through
New York City on March 17, 1762.

•The Chicago River has been dyed green every year since 1962.

What are the traditional symbols of Ireland?

The Shamrock

The Leprechaum
